Kutuki
Kutuki is a leading Indian preschool app made by educators and designers. I joined Kutuki in 2018 as an animator and illustrator, and left in 2023 as the Associate Creative Director and the lead Writer.
Initially, the app hosted distinct pieces of content, each with a different style and new set of characters. Over time we developed a set of characters within a "Kutuki" universe that culminated in a full season of a web series.
The series follows two siblings, Kutu and Ki, along with their Elephant friend, Minku, and a cast of supporting characters, as they take on adventures and learn new things along the way.
Animation Process
We had a small team of six animators, and a large quantity of videos to make. As the Animation Lead I streamlined the process by creating easy-to-use rigs and a library of templates for different actions. We also kept the animation style simple and snappy to keep up with the pace.
Web Series
After making a few stand alone pieces, we decided to work on a full season of ten episodes, each comprising of three mini episodes. Managing thirty mini episodes with a team of six animators required a lot of planning to get right. I worked as the Content Lead during this period, which involved planning, coordinating between the illustrators and animators, leading the animation team, writing and vetting the scripts and overlooking the voice over and sound work.
Writing & Music
In the last two years of working at Kutuki, I was the primary content writer. I wrote a majority of the scripts for the web series, as well as most of the songs.
I also have a background in music so at times I not only composed and wrote the songs but also produced the music. The vocals were then done by the VO artists.
The above Siren song was written and composed by me, as well as animated by me.
Exploring Styles
The video above is a snippet from a standalone video that we did within the Kutuki universe. After some experimentation I arrived at this textured style, while still keeping the animation process relatively simple.
